Activity Description

The SCAA’s 2011 Annual Meeting featured a full day dedicated to continuing medical education on Friday, September 23. Navigating a National Approach to SCA Survival featured sessions on the recent advances in preventing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and treating SCA patients, the pros and cons of athlete pre-participation evaluations, genetic testing and identification of patient psychosocial issues and ways to improve patient outcomes.

The SCAA Annual Meeting also offered a weekend full of sessions for SCA survivors, medical health professionals, community advocates and SCAA volunteers. Visit the SCAA website to learn more about Navigating A National Approach to SCA Survival.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the most important aspects of the acute management of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)
  • Understand and apply the new CPR guidelines
  • Describe the rationale behind the use of hypothermia early after resuscitation from sudden cardiac arrest
  • Describe current best practices for identifying patients at risk for sudden death, including diagnostic tests and imaging technologies
  • Understand the use of genetic testing to detect inherited arrhythmia syndromes and other genetic diseases
  • Identify the basics of ICD function, and common issues and problems in the management of patients with ICDs
  • Describe and empower HCPs on the difficult End of Life discussions with patients with ICDs
  • Identify promising therapies and approaches for the future treatment of SCA
  • Evaluate the role of pharmacologic therapy in the management of patients with SCA as well as risk factors, including cardiovascular disease and post-myocardial infarction care
  • Identify how to work with patients and family members to address concerns and anxieties
  • Recognize the importance of community preparedness and the role of immediate bystander action
  • Expand the HCP understanding of psycho-social concerns that impact the overall outcomes in survivors and their family

Accreditation Statement

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The Heart Rhythm Society and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association. The Heart Rhythm Society is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

AMA Credit Designation Statement

The Heart Rhythm Society designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The AMA has determined that physicians not licensed in the USA who participate in this CME activity are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Continuing Education (CE) for Nurses

The Heart Rhythm Society is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the New York State Nurses Association, an accredited provider by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

A maximum of 6.5 credit hours are available for this educational activity.

American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
