AHA/HRS Addendum to Personal and Public Safety Issues Related to Arrhythmias
that May Affect Consciousness: Implications for Regulation and Physician Recommendations

Patients receiving ICDs for primary prevention should be restricted from driving a private automobile for at least 1 week to allow for recovery from implantation of the defibrillator. Thereafter, these driving privileges should not be restricted in the absense of symptoms potentially related to an arrhythmia. Patients with ICDs for primary prevention must be instructed that impairment of consciousness is a possible future event, and may result in greater restrictions. These recommendations do not apply to the licensing of commercial drivers.

An Inter-Association Task Force sponsored by the National Athletic Trainer's Association developed consensus recommendations on emergency preparedness and management of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in athletes. The consensus statement summarizes the current understanding of SCA in young athletes, defines the necessary elements for emergency preparedness, and establishes uniform treatment protocols for management.

Ventricular arrhythmias (VA) are abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) that originate in the lower chambers of the heart (the ventricles) and often lead to SCD.
