05/11/12 - Analysis of Omni Registry Data Shows Appropriate Therapeutic Benefit and Outcomes In Primary Prevention Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) Therapy
A retrospective analysis of data from the OMNI Registry, a large-scale, longitudinal registry of nearly 3,000 heart device patients, revealed that primary prevention non-evidence-based implantable cardioverter-defibrillator recipients had similar therapeutic benefits and outcomes as evidence-based ICD recipients.  These findings are being presented today at Heart Rhythm 2012, the Heart Rhythm Society’s 33rd Annual Scientific Sessions.

05/11/12 - Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society and Heart Rhythm Society Issue Expert Statement On Management of Asymptomatic Patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White
The PACES/HRS Expert Consensus Statement on the Management of the Asymptomatic Young Patient with a Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW, Ventricular Preexcitation) Electrocardiographic Pattern provides first-of-its-kind clinical practice guidelines on the evaluation and management of asymptomatic young patients with a WPW electrocardiographic pattern.

05/11/12 - Radiofrequency Ablation Shows Superior Results As First-Line Therapy For Atrial Fibrillation – New Approach To Treatment Recommended
Results from a randomized clinical trial of 127 patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation from around the world show that pulmonary vein isolation with radiofrequency ablation is safe and significantly superior to the current first-line therapy approach of antiarrhythmic drugs, as reported today from Heart Rhythm 2012, the Heart Rhythm Society’s 33rd Annual Scientific Sessions.

05/10/12 - Black Africans 50 Percent Less Likely to Develop Atrial Fibrillation Than White Europeans Despite Greater Risk
A study presented at Heart Rhythm 2012, the Heart Rhythm Society’s 33rd Annual Scientific Sessions, reports that Black Africans are 50 percent less likely to develop atrial fibrillation than White Europeans, despite greater prevalence of risk factors, such as heart failure, diabetes, prior stroke and left ventricular hypertrophy.

05/10/12 - Latest Heart Device – Subcutaneous implantable defibrillator (S-ICD SYSTEM) – Continues to Show Positive Results
Initial results from the international Evaluation oF FactORs ImpacTing CLinical Outcome and Cost EffectiveneSS (EFFORTLESS) subcutaneous implantable defibrillator (S-ICD System) Registry shows that the latest heart device, the S-ICD System, is performing appropriately in real-world circumstances and continues to show positive results in patients.  This data is being presented for the first time at Heart Rhythm 2012, the Heart Rhythm Society’s 33rd Annual Scientific Sessions.

05/10/12 - Study Of International ICD Sports Safety Registry Shows Restriction Of All Competitive Sports For Those With Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs) May Not Be Necessary
A study of more than 350 competitive athletes with implantable cardioverter from around the world showed for the first time that sports may be safer for this group than has been thought.  There were no occurrences of death or injury due to arrhythmia or shock during sports in this group.  Additionally, only ten percent of the athletes received a shock during competition or practice and of those, most continued to play, as reported at Heart Rhythm 2012, the Heart Rhythm Society’s 33rd Annual Scientific Sessions.

05/09/12 - Study Shows Obese Individuals Carrying Weight in Abdominal Region Have Double the Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death
An analysis of the more than 15,000 people enrolled in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC), a United States prospective biracial cohort study, showed that not only does obesity have a linear association with sudden cardiac death in the general population, but even more importantly, people who have a larger waste-to-hip ratio, or carry their weight in the abdominal region, have double the risk of SCD.
