Urge Your Representative to Co-sponsor H. Res. 255
The Heart Rhythm Society applauds Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD) and Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX) for introducing House Resolution 255 (H. Res. 255), which would raise awareness of atrial fibrillation (AF), on March 17, 2009.
| Society Seeks AF Patient Stories In order to put a face to this serious condition and get the "National AF Awareness Month" resolution passed, the Society is looking for unique AF patient stories for various materials and possible activities on Capitol Hill. Younger AF patients are needed most (ideally in their 30s or 40s) but we would gladly welcome any patient stories that you can assist with. To help identify and contact the patients for their personal stories, please contact Isabelle LeBlanc. |
H. Res. 255 would establish the month of September as “National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month” — please take a few moments to view the complete resolution (PDF, 155K) and e-mail your Representative asking him or her to co-sponsor this legislation.
The bill notes that AF is the most common cardiac malfunction with increased prevalence anticipated as the United States population ages and that AF accounts for approximately one-third of hospitalizations for cardiac rhythm disturbances. H. Res. 255 aims to raise awareness about AF, improve the public’s ability to identify warning signs, encourage individuals to seek medical attention in a timely manner and promote the need for further research for AF treatment.
H. Res. 255 asks the U.S. House of Representatives to resolve to:
- support the designation of a "National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month
- support "National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month" and efforts to educate people about AF
- recognize the need for additional research into treatment for AF
- encourage the people of the United States and interested groups to observe and support "National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month" through appropriate programs and activities to promote public awareness of AF and potential treatments for it.
