The Society is educating Congress about Sudden Cardiac Arrest and advocating the need for increased public education and awareness. The following ad appeared in the September 10, 2008 issue of Roll Call magazine

Thank you, Members of Congress who agreed to co-sponsor Senate Concurrent Resolution 93 and House Concurrent Resolution 393, which call for a National Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month in October. The resolutions will support efforts to raise awareness about the risk of SCA, improve the public’s ability to identify warning signs, encourage individuals to seek medical attention in a timely manner and promote the need for further research into the causes of this leading killer. Full text of ad: "I was sitting in my office, when I suddenly slumped over. An office worker performed CPR, and paramedics shocked my heart with an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). After many tests, the doctors determined I suffered sudden cardiac Arrest (SCA). I now have an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICd) that monitors my heart rate and can deliver a shock if needed. Because of SCA awareness and treatment, I am alive today!" Daniel Stenberg, Age 26.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims more than 250,000 American lives each year — more than breast cancer, lung cancer, stroke or AIDS. It occurs without warning and affects people of all ages and races. 95% of people who suffer SCA do not survive...help change the odds!
