Heart Rhythm 2010 Opening Plenary Session
A capacity crowd enjoyed the Opening Plenary Session on Wednesday, May 12, which addressed some of the tough questions surrounding the impact of health care reform on quality and outcomes, and interpreted its meaning for the field.
For the first time, the Opening Plenary Session featured guest panelists who discussed the tough issues facing the medical industry, addressing health care reform and its impact on the field of electrophysiology: Moderator Susan Dentzer, Editor-in-Chief, Health Affairs and Analyst on Health, The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS); Tom Daschle, Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Author of Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis; Juan Williams National Political Correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR) Political Analyst for the Fox News Channel Panelist for Fox News Sunday and Author; Harlan M. Krumholz, MD, Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Public Health Yale University School of Medicine and Richard I. Fogel, MD, FHRS CCDS, Heart Rhythm Society Health Policy Chair and The Care Group LLC. Dr. Fogel substituted for Eric N. Prystowsky, MD, FHRS, who unfortunately had to miss Heart Rhythm 2010 due to a death in his family.
The panelists led a lively discussion on how health care reform affects patient care and professional medical education. Panelists also touched on how medical practices may change as Medicare and Private payers are moving from fee-for-service to quality outcomes based on payment systems, and the question of ethics and industry-physician relationships, and took questions from many of the attendees.
Hosted by Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) President, Richard L. Page, MD, FHRS, and Bruce L. Wilkoff, MD, FHRS, Chair of Scientific Sessions Program Committee, the session officially kicked off Heart Rhythm 2010, the 31st Annual Scientific Sessions. “The Society’s Scientific Sessions is a unique opportunity for our industry to come together and share research and expertise that strengthens our profession and improve overall patient care,” said Richard L. Page, MD, FHRS. “This year we are proud to initiate the 31st annual meeting with an Opening Plenary Session featuring industry experts who will shed light on the current challenges and opportunities facing our field.”
